Why is it important to complete this E-Card?

The E-Card to the right is an essential tool letting the Provincial Government know that investing in sport is important. The E-Card provides a standard message and an opportunity for you to include your own thoughts on the importance of funding sport in BC beyond 2010. We need to show the Government that British Columbians care about sport and that we want them to invest in supporting BC athletes and sport in our province. Take the time to read the E-Card, complete your details and submit this to the Premier.

Where does the E-Card go?

The E-Card is emailed to BC Athlete Voice. We will print your E-Card and mail it to Premier Campbell, the Opposition Critic for Sport, the Minister of Healthy Living and Sport and your MLA.

How can I do more to support Sport?

Good question! Dear Premier Campbell,

Thumbs up, and thank you for the vision your government showed in hosting the 2010 Olympic and Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games in British Columbia.  I appreciate your investment in sport, our athletes, our communities and our strong sporting tradition.

Your government's investments have helped British Columbia’s athletes to record personal bests, make Olympic and Paralympic teams, and star at last summer’s Canada Games.  Your funding has made sport more accessible for youth.  Your investments have readied our athletes to take to the podium at the 2010 Games.

However, I am concerned about the future of sport in our province.  The announced funding to sport for the 2010/2011 fiscal year is nearly half of that provided in 2008/2009.  This decline in funding will mean that:

·  Sport will be less accessible to young people from low and middle income homes and many current athletes will not be able to afford to continue to train and compete;

·  Fewer sports opportunities will exist for the children and youth of 2010, our next generation of high performance athletes; and,

·  Sport clubs and provincial sport organizations will not be able to expand on the increased interest in sport among youth and build on the success we have experienced with current athletes.

Count this as my thumbs up for a return in sport funding to 2008/2009 levels.
